Sergent paints Monet

The French expression en plein air translates as "in the open air", and is borrowed into English to describe the act of painting outdoors. This type of art was not terribly practical before commercial painting papers and tube paints became commonplace. During the Renaissance landscape paintings were no more than backdrops for portraiture. With some exceptions, these were prefunctory and often quite imaginery but not terribly true to nature.
