Since Mahone Bay was established by German settlers the persistence of Weihnachtsmann or "Father Christmas" is natural. The Lutherans had trouble with idea of Saint Nicholas and replaced him with das Christkind. In the mid nineteenth century these two gift-givers began to give way to "Father Christmas" or "Heer Winter" a character created by Austrian born Moritz von Schwind in a series of woodcuts made for a magazine of that period.
